Episode 9 of A Couple of Cuckoos was yet another heartwarming episode. Although this episode may be a bit slower than the previous ones despite a lot going on, there were some sweet and wholesome moments, especially between Erika, Sachi, and their father who invited everyone to an impromptu fishing trip. However, right before all that, something unimaginable occurred.
Nagi and Hiro Went on a Date
Hiro asks Nagi out on a date all of a sudden and part of the reason why she did it was because she wanted the couple’s discount. Again, expected the unexpected in this series. As far as dates go in anime, you get to have a feel of the dynamic of the pair, and this particular date barely showed the chemistry between the two. There was one unexpected scene where the two went into a mirror maze and Nagi accidentally kissed Hiro’s reflection and confessed to her. The scene was so rushed that it didn’t feel magical at all. The build-up to that scene either was almost non-existent. I mean, if Hiro really was the girl for Nagi, the first half of this episode would’ve been produced more tenderly but it came out really forced in the end. It’s kinda sad to see that Hiro’s spotlight keeps getting butchered and makes the series a bit unbearable to watch. Hopefully, they do her some justice soon because despite all these events happening to her she’s actually not a bad character. On the bright side though, the hang-out of Erika and Sachi while the date was ongoing and the Umino fishing trip saved the episode.
The Umino Family Bonding
While Nagi and Hiro went on a date, it was finally time for Erika and Sachi to spend some time together. From going to a batting center to unleash some rage and to a bathhouse to cool off after, the entirety of the sister’s hang-out was wholesome. I wish this was the main focal point of the first half of the episode and not the previously mentioned date. While Sachi and Erika were indeed having sweet catching-up moments, it didn’t stop there because it continued until the unplanned fishing trip.
The fishing trip was the main highlight of this episode. What makes the trip significant is that it showed that even after all of the arranged marriage and everything, it didn’t create any discrepancies in the family dynamic between Nagi and his father. Nagi still enjoys bonding with him and at the same time, his father is still supportive of him. It’s nice to see a heartwarming scene between the two and it was even sweeter when Erika was watching the two trying to reminisce the good old times.
