Review: Tengoku Daimakyo Episode 9

Tengoku Daimakyo’s 9th episode aired yesterday and there’s only one thing I can say: I love being right when it comes to predicting certain moments. After the emotional last week’s goodbye, Maru and Kiruko set out to look for the origin of the button Usami had, and on the way, they discover some interesting details. This is also the first episode in a while that also focuses on the mysterious facility Tokio and others are living in.

First off, the mysterious facility appears to be some kind of a nursery – hence the episode title “Children of the Nursery.” As predicted, Tokio is pregnant, and after one of the employees notices a meeting gets called. We are able to see that there is some internal power struggle and that the nursery is part of a bigger project with people from all over the world. Attendees seem shocked by the revelation – some due to Tokio’s age and others because nobody seems to know who the father is.

Kona, who somehow felt that Tokio would be taken away by the same people “who took Asura” away, is nowhere to be seen. Asura’s backstory and apparent suicide were also shown – but Mimihime is somehow able to see her outline up in the ceiling. She doesn’t seem to know who Asura is and is somewhat freaked out by the fact that she is the only one who can see it. It’s easy to assume that these children are not “normal” and that they get introduced to the facility as teens – Director mentions a group of 15-year-olds that will be joining soon. They also don’t appear to have any real-life knowledge or experience, because during the meeting Director mentions that they were never taught the concept of sex.

Outside, Maru and Kiruko are closing in on the symbol which we now know is Takahara Academy’s logo. During their search, they meet a mysterious man named Juichi who tells them weird stories while seemingly trying to keep them away from the truth, as they are standing outside of the building where Takahara offices once were. What stood out to me is that Juichi tells them theories about the Collapse and mentions alien invasion while showing a photo of what looks like Asura soaring through the skies. Maybe she never died but instead managed to break free.

Maru’s tooth is growing, implying that he also isn’t a normal human being – which makes sense if his mother is Tokio (and she probably is). Since Maru doesn’t have any memories I have to wonder if they kept him somewhere before letting him out like they seemingly did with the other children in there. Either way, I can’t wait for next week’s episode because it feels like we are finally getting closer to learning the truth.

Episode 9 of Tengoku Daimakyo is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
