Pokémon Go 2 was described as “pretty clearly not the correct thing to do” in a new interview with Ed Wu, who oversees the game as president of games at Scopely. Scopely operates Pokémon Go after acquiring it from Niantic. Games Industry.biz reported Wu’s comments earlier this month.

Wu added that since the games are structured to fit into people’s lives, dividing the community by creating a sequel “doesn’t make as much sense.” He adds that “if and when” Scopely creates something new, presumably with Pokémon, “it will really have to be from a different angle, but still with this notion of inspiring people to explore the world together.

Niantic sold Pokémon Go and its mobile game business to Scopely in March 2025 for $3.5 billion. As the former SVP of Pokémon Go at Niantic, Wu told Eurogamer in 2024 pre-acquisition that Pokémon Go‘s next 10 years are guaranteed.

Pokémon GO is a free-to-play game with in-app purchases, officially described as “an immersive open-world multiplayer RPG that enables you to live your own RPG adventure in augmented reality. Find and evolve all Pokémon and battle with other players in AR online in this multiplayer adventure RPG.
