16 – Kazushi Miyamoto
Early on I didn’t like Kaz very much. I didn’t even finish his Social Link on my first playthrough. Over time he kept growing on me though. Kaz’s Social Link broadly revolves around a horrible knee injury which makes it difficult for him to run and practice the way he’d like to. His five year-old nephew got into a horrific accident that left him without the use of his legs. He doesn’t want to go through the physical therapy it’d take for him to be mobile again.
Kaz makes a deal with him; if he wins nationals and becomes number one in Japan, his nephew will do physical therapy. This creates a lose-lose situation that frustrates Kaz. Running will worsen his injury and possibly make it so that he’s unable to walk. But not running means his nephew won’t do physical therapy and won’t be able to walk. He has to learn that hiding his injury is a selfish thing despite him doing it for selfless reasons. It’s not a complicated story, but the layers to it come together well. Persona 5 also features an injured runner Social Link, and I’m rather certain this one served as some inspiration.
