14 – Hidetoshi Odagiri

Odagiri is another Social Link who grew on me over time and ended up ranking far higher than I ever expected him to. His character arc follows him progressing from a harsh rule-follower to a more mild person who understands that punishments should be reasonable and power can be a corrupting force. Since he’s available early, he actually ends up being a neat tie-in to the betrayal by Ikutsuki, the cult led by Takaya, and some premises Nyx and Ryoji take for granted.

He learns, after he’s pressured to accuse the protagonist of smoking in the school, that those in power can contort the rules to punish people who don’t deserve it. He sees himself in the teachers who pressure him and changes. Since late in the game the SEES team is betrayed by Ikutsuki, who erroneously assumes he’s an important figure once he’s the only remaining person who knows the truth about Tartarus, this becomes a very topical message. Even more so once the NPCs of the game’s world start blindly worshipping Nyx as a means of throwing away the pressure of life by submitting to a willing authority.
