12 – Old Couple (Mitsuko and Bunkichi)
I doubt many people would rank these two as high as I have, and I fully get it. They can be pretty forgettable at times, especially since their Social Link is very dialogue heavy and mostly takes place within their bookstore. But, I think it covers a set of themes that are both important in general and crucial to the story.
The key component of their arc is understanding what to hold onto and what to let go of. In the beginning, they find themselves wanting to do everything in their power to keep a persimmon tree alive in memory of their deceased son. In the end, they realize that letting the tree be removed so that a new school building could help students would honor his memory much better.
It’s a nice way of presenting ways that trying to preserve something in honor of someone can in fact go against what they’d want you to do. Considering all of the deaths in Persona 3 Reload, it’s also a staunch reminder that you need to hold onto the true essence of what those who have left taught you. I think this Social Link is one that definitely hits certain people a lot harder, but I was one of them.
