7 – Yukari Takeba

Yukari is one of the most well developed characters over the course of Persona 3 Reload. Like the other SEES members, her Social Link is closely tied to her story character arc. But, unlike some other characters, her major grief-causing event happened before the start of the series. During her Social Link, she acts somewhat bratty about her mother dating tons of people and living irresponsibly after her father’s death.

Yukari, unlike someone like Junpei, wants a normal life with a normal (and alive) family. She lashes out at her mother because of this and generally has a disdain toward any, even momentarily, absent parent. This can potentially come off as abrasive and thoughtless, and that’s very much the point. She’s a teenager whose father died in an incredibly suspicious way trying to navigate grief while discovering the truth of his death. It’s not a surprise that she handles things poorly. To her, the best way to process grief isn’t hanging onto others, but instead being strong by yourself.

The latter part of her Social Link is all about her learning to depend on others and let them help her, something which helps her understand and ultimately reconcile with her mother. It’s a heartwarming Social Link and one of the few romances that I don’t think felt shoehorned in the slightest.
