5 – Ken Amada
I didn’t think much of Amada when he first moved into the dorm. I actually expected him to be a Social Link not dissimilar to other younger Social Link characters across persona games, something like an older version of Maiko’s link. But, the moment he summoned his Persona Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, I was deeply worried for the guy.
Amada is without question one of the most tortured personalities in the entire game. It isn’t for a while that we find out why he trains, segregates himself from other kids, and refuses to let himself even enjoy ramen with someone else. He was committing to killing someone and then taking his own life before we even first see him in battle. The Japanese voice acting went a long way with his character too, perfectly alternating between his quiet, respectful tone, the giddy tone he’d adopt when talking about relatively childish things, and the haunting tone reserved for his darkest moments.
It’s not the kind of voice you’d expect from a kid. I know I noted that I wasn’t considering normal story or gameplay as part of these Links, but with Amada his link is inextricably linked to Aragaki’s death. Rather than ponder the meaning or significance of death, Amada is someone who was committed to dying and now has to figure out how to live for himself. It’s a very unique storyline for a very unique and well-presented character.
