23 – Maya
Multiple Persona games have a Social Link where you find out your teacher has a crush on you, apparently. The Maya social link takes place entirely within an online MMORPG, though the Link’s dialogue is typically nothing to do with video games. Maya, a.k.a the player’s homeroom teacher Isako Toriumi, mostly involves Toriumi complaining about her job. She messages the player entirely in strongly exaggerated leetspeak.
This was, if anything, an embarrassing reminder of how people would sometimes type online in the 2000s, but it didn’t significantly uplift her character to. But, more importantly, The Maya Social Link doesn’t have solid foundations in terms of its character arc. Sure, Toriumi says she learns from the protagonist, but there isn’t a huge amount that points to this. She makes it over the others largely because the scenes with her on the final day, where she realizes the protagonist was the “Tatsuya” she was speaking to all along, are incredibly funny.
