My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission Grosses Over $1.4 Million in First 10 Days

The newest My Hero Academia film, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission, grossed over $1.4 million in the first 10 days of showing. This paves the way for what is most likely going to be the highest-grossing movie in the My Hero Academia series.

The film hit theaters across Japan on August 6, 2021. It was off to a decent start by taking second place in terms of viewers in that week’s ranking. This week, it ranked third, earning 1.6 billion yen (≒ 1.47 million in United States dollars) with 1.28 million viewers in total, Kogyo Tsushinsha reported on August 16. F9: The Fast Saga topped the chart, with Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime following in the second place.

My Hero Academia series has received three anime film adaptations so far, including the one currently showing at cinemas. The first one, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes (2018) earned 1.72 billion yen (≒1.57 million USD), while the second, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (2019), earned around 1.79 billion yen (≒ 16,3 million USD).

Horikoshi Kouhei about My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission film

Horikoshi Kouhei, the author of the My Hero Academia manga, posted his thoughts on the film, and its original character Rody. He says the movie was really fun and that it filled him with a sense of gratitude:

“I watched the film. I was moved to tears of gratitude as a viewer. It was really fun! I’m purely grateful for the people involved [in the film] such as director Nagasaki. Rody was cooler than I had imagined! I wish he could appear in the main story. I wish so.”

What is My Hero Academia?

My Hero Academia is a shonen manga series written and illustrated by Horikoshi Kouhei. It’s been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2014.

Viz Media has been publishing the manga in English and describes the story as:

Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn’t got an ounce of power in him. With no chance of ever getting into the prestigious U.A. High School for budding heroes, his life is looking more and more like a dead end. Then an encounter with All Might, the greatest hero of them all, gives him a chance to change his destiny…
