Celebrating 30 Years of Detective Conan: Top 10 Iconic Moments

1. “Shinichi’s Return” and “The Promised Place” — Episodes 192 & 193

In the legendary climatic “Desperate Revival” arc, fans were shocked with Shinichi seemingly returning and facing an opponent unlike any other. Unlike the usual culprits that cannot defend against the brilliant detective, Satoru proved how frightening and exhilarating it was changing the usual scenarios in the series. In fact, this level of precision and evil is usually reserved for the Black Organization or Police Stories, and changed how dangerously smart opponents like Satoru were.

Satoru had prepared numerous answers and traps, like how Shinichi found a pack of gloves and was quickly foiled, discovering that numerous guests had unknowingly touched them. The party upstairs wasn’t a coincidence, the culprit deliberately waited and planned it to his advantage, successfully tricking everyone especially Shinichi and the Police. This isn’t something Shinichi is used to, since Mouri Kogoro is the one left clueless but now he has to take all of that. Finally, the culprit’s high confidence also prevented Shinichi from gaining any leverage, making this a literal battle of endurance until Satoru dropped his guard.

These episodes were also another pivotal moment for Shinichi and Ran, where the dinner was supposed to properly progress them towards a relationship. First off, Shinichi wasn’t planning on leaving Ran’s side, and ignored the curiosity to check the commotion. He knew better than to leave without saying anything, since the antidote was too good to be true, and was encouraged to quickly solve it anyway. Between the suspect’s high IQ and the physical restlessness of the antidote wearing off, how could anyone get through this episode feeling hyped about the victory yet defeated in their relationship.

Ran and the audience were literally praying that the two lovers wouldn’t be separated again. But classic Aoyama-sensei left us, with a promise that continues to ache to this day. Shinichi might have left a message, but how incredibly frustrating it is to not say everything when you could, especially in your own body. What was your top moment throughout the entire series?

Conan: Shinichi nii-chan told me, that one day, One day, for sure…He’ll come back even if it kills him. That’s why… that’s why… He wants you to wait for him.
