4. “Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: Two Mysteries of the Night of the Full Moon” (Episode 345)
To this day, no other arc is more discussed than the ‘Vermouth Arc’ because of its creepy atmosphere and unexpected execution. Unlike Gin and Vodka with their usual appearances, their presence is only momentary and resolved within a short time, whereas Vermouth is like an inextinguishable fire and grows everyday. Her abilities to disguise herself and to operate from the shadows have driven fans insane; making Conan feel like the prey instead of the hunter for a change. Some of her best moments include stealing the Police’s information on Mouri Kogoro (269), the dartboard of photos (277-278), the mysterious program (309), and more.
For the longest time, fans theorized that Vermouth was disguised as Ran’s new English teacher, Jodie Starling. The resemblance was uncanny and the way Jodie presented herself was beyond normal. Think back to when she showed immense combat skills on the bus and how creepy the episodes involving her ended in complete shock.
You don’t just wake up and say “I’m just a regular teacher” and not show off talent like a secret agent, especially with the most eerie soundtracks and beautifully detailed but chilling animations. There’s more to this theory, but it’s best to experience it for yourselves and see all the hidden details that Aoyama-sensei is known for. You’ll be in for a big surprise on how it was structured and the moments leading into the biggest showdown at the time.
The biggest takeaway was the series shift towards an international thriller, by including other organizations and keeping it a secret regarding their allegiance as friends or foes. Akai Shuichi’s presence was something only Gin pulled off, as he was stalking Conan and Ran and left to the viewers imagination of what were his true intentions. His scary gaze combined with the creepy music has misdirected fans about him being an additional member of the Black Organization. I honestly wouldn’t have been as surprised if more members from the Organization were showing up, considering the change from being chased after to feeling cornered and trapped.
