8. Gosho Aoyama’s Collection of Short Stories
Before the creation of any definite series, there are always alternate ideas or universes that sometimes become fragments of the final piece. Aoyama-sensei’s early experiments with romance, suspense, and comedy eventually became the foundations for his masterpieces: Magic Kaito (1987), Yaiba (1988), and Detective Conan (1994). Fans were surprised to see the rare collection that most writers cringe at and instead gave us some of the greatest shorts.
It was interesting to see how titles like Wait For Me and The Santa Claus of Summer provided the thrilling energy and relatable moments to the characters in under 20 minutes. The resolved plots and promises that each character held for each another were definitely present in Aoyama-sensei’s current works, showcasing the utter brilliance that even the drafts held. Even the simplest messages like the desire to be worthy for someone and overcoming your stresses was enough to resonate with anyone watching. I’d say more, but it’s better to see why fans adore these specials.
There are numerous more titles that must be seen, if you haven’t already and if the studios and stream networks are listening in, please remaster or license these hidden gems so modern fans can re-experience them! These stories may be short, but they prove that Aoyama-sensei’s heart for mystery and romance has been there since day one.
