2. Kudo Shinichi Returns! Showdown with the Black Organization Drama Special
I know what you’re thinking “live dramas? But why?” With the ever expanding popularity of the One Piece live adaption, I circled back on every live performance and found that Detective Conan had some of the greatest portrayals ages ago. As part of the special anniversary projects, we were given unique scenarios that allegedly wouldn’t break canon like the time where Shinichi and Shiho were both present and somewhat confronted by the Black Organization.
Conan and Haibara were invited to the Miss Japanesque pageant, when they accidentally ate a cake containing Paikal, an alcohol that transforms them back into adults. They then have to solve the blackmail mystery turned into murder, and accidentally attracts the organization’s attention for a complicated and thrilling story. We normally wouldn’t expect a story like this until the final confrontation, but to visualize the possible scenario was the moment we were waiting for.
Conan and Haibara’s unique bond has captured everyone’s hearts for the witty banter and becoming the best of friends. Despite their awkward start, they protected and provided one another the comfort of being themselves when no one else was around. The moment they transformed back into their normal selves, the tone shifted from the casual teasing to a more serious one. It was surreal knowing that they could finally (in a way) reveal themselves in their real bodies, the worries and ambitions they’ve carried as shown through the actors. Hopefully we’ll get another scenario where both Conan and Haibara are in their adult forms, instead of just one or the other appearing.
Speaking of the final battle, Gin’s portrayal was just as creepy as his anime counterpart, with his rough voice and eyes that pierced through diamonds. Throughout the entire duration, all I could feel was a hunter slowly creeping up on you and breathing happily for you to notice. The confrontation definitely fits into canon because the organization still doesn’t know that it was Shinichi nor the effects of the poison APTX 4869. Although it was breathtaking and cemented as a popular fan-favorite special, hopefully the day will come when everything is revealed.
Until then, the studios and staff should bring these lost gems to official platforms like Crunchyroll, Netflix, or the TMS Entertainment Youtube Channel. Any fan of the mystery series has to see these drama specials. Also enjoy the special and official illustration below of Shiho and Shinichi in their original bodies and the clothes worn in the episodes: “Reunion with the Black Organization”. If this isn’t a sign of the final coming, I don’t know what is.
Fun Fact: The Live Action Drama Specials, Kudo Shinichi’s Written Challenge was celebrated for the 10th anniversary, while The Mystery of the Legendary Strange Bird and TV Drama Series was for the 15th anniversary!
