13 – Junpei Iori
As friendly as Junpei is, and as much as I loved the performance by both of his voice actors (shoutout to Zeno), I couldn’t rank him quite as high as I wish I could. Junpei has one quality that I think a lot of young men have growing up: he yearns for the day he gets to be a hero. A large part of his actions in Persona 3 Reload and within the Link itself are him searching for purpose.
Early on he’s still bummed that the protagonist is constantly in the spotlight while he’s on the sidelines. In his life, he always messed up when it came time to do something important. So he constantly feels frustrated that he can’t be the hero for everyone, so much so that he seemingly almost wanted Tartarus and the Dark Hour to stick around if only to let him keep saving people.
It’s a really relatable aspect of his personality. And this may be a hot take, but I actually think that his infatuation with Chidori lacked a lot of foundation. I genuinely feel like he’d have fallen in love with any girl who gave him attention. But, even then, his struggle to juggle his desire to support her and respect her feelings was a nice part of the Link.
